Being a mom means everything to me. I have two boys (ages 6 and 8) who have completely changed my world. They give me purpose and more love than I ever imagined. But no matter how much I love them and love being mom, I feel I am more than that. I am a woman. I am a wife. I have thoughts and desires that go beyond motherhood. After I had my second son, a friend of mine encouraged me to book a boudoir portrait session and have photos taken. At the time, I didn't give it a second thought. I was at a place in life with my body that I wasn't happy with so I quickly shut the door. Confident and sexy were two words that did not describe how I felt. For the next two years, I began to feel more open to the idea of booking a boudoir shoot, but I always ended up talking myself out of it: I really want to lose 10 more pounds, I have absolutely no time, it's just way too expensive, etc. Finally, I did it. I committed to being the ONLY subject in the photos, it was just me. Was it expensive? Yes. But I don't regret it at all. What started as a gift to my husband, ended up being the ultimate gift to myself. I was pampered and coached every step of the way, feeling sexy as hell. It was my own boudoir experience that led me to where I am now. The moment I saw myself through the camera lens, I saw myself in a completely different light. I was able to see the beauty that everyone else sees, and whole-heartedly accept it with confidence. My boudoir photography experience unexpectedly ignited a passion in me. A passion to make EVERY woman feel just as confident, just as beautiful, and just as powerful as I do every time I look at my boudoir photos and think back to that amazing day.
Boudoir photography is not just taking intimate photos. To me, a boudoir portrait is so much more. It is meaning. It is capturing a moment in time, where ever you are at that exact point in your life. Maybe it's being a bride, maybe it's an anniversary, maybe it's a birthday, maybe it's a postpartum journey, maybe it's a special going away present for your partner, maybe it's a celebration of being cancer free, maybe it's "just because". Boudoir is a celebration of you and your body, a way to recognize and commemorate all you have been through and all that you are. To me, the outfits and items you choose for your shoot should represent who you are and the things in your life that matter. It could be an engraved watch, the garter from your wedding day, military tags, a jacket, a hat, a t-shirt, a ring, etc. So when you look at the images, there is more than just sexy photos. There is meaning.
In this day and age, many women feel "less than" because of the expectations that society puts on us--our skin, our body shape, what we wear as if it defines who we are. To me, boudoir photography is a way to give the middle finger to that notion. It's a way to say I AM MORE. As a boudoir photographer, my job is not just to take photos and it's is not to make you look like a supermodel (although you might feel that way). It's to make you SEE YOURSELF the way the camera does. My job is to remove your insecurities and to reveal your true beauty. The transformation that takes place in front my lens when a woman's confidence emerges, is nothing less than breathtaking. I know it is scary and believe me I understand ALL of your reservations. Put your trust in me. Take this opportunity. Invest in yourself. Empower yourself. Capture and celebrate who you are at this EXACT point in your life, even if it's not your favorite time. In my experience, these are often the times that are the most meaningful to reflect back on!
